Arguing for China's atomic bomb, he said 就是当了裤子也要把原子弹搞出来, 'even if we have to pawn our trousers, we will build the bomb', with 当 meaning 'to pawn'. A keen Go player, in 2012 he became the first non-Japanese in Japan's Go Hall of Fame.
