A small, nearly black berry so astringent and sour that it is more often processed than eaten fresh. It is sold as juice, wine, jam, powder and dried berries.
Native to North America but widely cultivated in Eastern Europe (especially Poland), where aronia juice is a household health product. The Chinese name literally reads 'wild cherry berry.'
