Tips

usage
赋得 at the start of a title marks a poem on a set topic, often an exam exercise; here the topic was grass on an old plain, and a farewell. The poem is often called just 《草》. Its first lines are the ones everyone knows: 离离原上草,一岁一枯荣 'thick grass on the plain, each year it withers and thrives'.
history
The story goes that when the young poet called on the official 顾况 in Chang'an, Gu joked about his name 居易: rice is dear in Chang'an, so living there is not easy. After reading these lines he said that a man who wrote like this would live there with ease.
