history
白居易, governor of Hangzhou from 822 to 824, praised the "white sand causeway" (白沙堤) in a poem, and the causeway came to carry his name. The dike he actually built, to hold water for the fields, stood elsewhere and is long gone.
usage
With 苏堤 it is one of West Lake's two causeways. At its eastern end is the 断桥, the Broken Bridge where Lady White first meets Xu Xian in the Legend of the White Snake.
