The fruit of the oleaster: small and oval, pink to reddish brown with dense silvery scales, and dry, mealy, sweet-sour flesh around a stone. Grown across northern China, it is eaten fresh or ground into flour.
A drought- and cold-tolerant tree of northwest China (Xinjiang, Gansu, Ningxia), widely planted to fix shifting sand and shelter crops. The small oval fruit is mealy and sweet; leaves can feed livestock. Also called 桂香柳.
