Tips

history

The histories name her only as 梁氏, Lady Liang; the name 红玉 comes from later plays and stories. In 1130 her husband 韩世忠 trapped the fleet of the Jin commander 金兀术 at 黄天荡 on the Yangtze for 48 days, and she is remembered beating the war drums on his ship.

culture

In Peking opera she is a 刀马旦 role, and 梅兰芳 played her in 《抗金兵》 (Resisting the Jin Army), first staged in 1933.
