Co-founder and head of 百度 (Baidu), China's biggest search engine, started in 2000. He named it after a line by the Song poet 辛弃疾, 众里寻他千百度, about searching a crowd a thousand times.

He studied information management at Peking University and computer science at the University at Buffalo. In 1996 he created RankDex, a link-based way to rank search results, and Larry Page's PageRank patent later cited his work.
