Pear-shaped tropical fruit with orange flesh around a hollow of black seeds. Ripe, it is eaten raw or blended with milk into papaya milk; unripe and green, it is stir-fried as a vegetable or shredded into sour salads.
In modern Chinese, 木瓜 most commonly refers to papaya (Carica papaya), the tropical fruit. However, in classical Chinese and botanical contexts, 木瓜 refers to Chaenomeles (Chinese quince), a different plant entirely.
