Tips

usage
古称 works two ways. As a noun: X 是 Y 的古称 'X is the ancient name of Y'. As a verb right after a place: Y 古称 X 'Y was called X in ancient times'. Compare 旧称 (any earlier name), 别称 (another name in use now) and 简称 (an abbreviation).
