Born in 延津 county in Henan, he studied Chinese at 北京大学. His novel 《一句顶一万句》 (Someone to Talk To) won the 茅盾文学奖 in 2011, and several of his books became films by 冯小刚, including 《手机》 (Cell Phone, 2003) and 《我不是潘金莲》 (2016).
