Founded 京东 (JD.com) as an electronics stall in Beijing in 1998 and built it into one of China's largest online retailers. He grew up in a village in Suqian, Jiangsu, and is married to 章泽天.
京东 joins two names: 京 from his then girlfriend 龚小京 and 东 from his own. JD's founding day, 18 June, gave China the 618 shopping festival, a midyear rival to 双十一 (Double Eleven).
