About Lei Feng

1940–1962 · 历史人物 historical figure

PLA soldier who died in an accident at 21. After Mao's 1963 call to learn from him he became the national model of helping others: 5 March is 学雷锋日, and a kind stranger is a 活雷锋.

Children call him 雷锋叔叔 'Uncle Lei Feng'. Because the good deeds bunch up around 5 March, a wry jingle goes 雷锋叔叔没户口，三月来了四月走: 'Uncle Lei Feng has no residence permit: he comes in March and leaves in April.'
history
He was killed when a truck he was guiding backwards hit a telephone pole, which fell on him. In his diary, whose authenticity is debated, he vows to be a screw that never rusts, the source of 螺丝钉精神 'screw spirit': serving faithfully wherever you are placed.
