Fifth Generation film director. His debut 黄土地 (Yellow Earth, 1984) announced a new Chinese cinema, and 霸王别姬 (1993), about two Peking opera actors, is still the only Chinese-language Palme d'Or winner.
He was born 陈皑鸽, 'snow-white dove', a name sharing the 皑 of his father, the film director 陈怀皑. The name he uses, 凯歌, sounds almost the same and means 'song of triumph'.
