Star spiker of China's women's volleyball team, the 女排, in its 1980s winning run, including Olympic gold in 1984. As head coach she led the team to Olympic gold again in 2016.
Her nickname 铁榔头 'iron hammer' comes from her powerful, accurate spikes. As coach of the United States she beat China 3–2 at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and in 2016 she became the first person to win Olympic volleyball gold as both player and coach.
