Tips

history
With his father 苏洵 and his brother he makes up the 三苏, all three counted among the 唐宋八大家. He rose to be a vice chief minister in the 1090s and, like his brother, was sent into exile more than once in the quarrels over 王安石's reforms. He spent his last years quietly at 颍昌, today's Xuchang in Henan.
culture
The brothers stayed close all their lives. 苏轼's Mid-Autumn ci 《水调歌头》 of 1076, which ends 但愿人长久,千里共婵娟, was written thinking of him: its preface names 子由, Su Zhe's courtesy name.
