Little is known of his life. Tradition makes him a student of 施耐庵, the traditional author of 《水浒传》. His novel builds on 陈寿's 《三国志》 and on the tales of storytellers; the Qing historian 章学诚 judged it 七分实事, 三分虚构 'seven parts fact, three parts fiction'.
