The 独生子女政策 ran from about 1980 to 2015 as the core of 计划生育 (family planning) and limited most urban couples to one child. From 2016 all couples could have two children, and from 2021 three.
culture
The generation it produced are the 独生子女 (only children), sometimes teased as 小皇帝 (little emperors) for growing up with the attention of two parents and four grandparents.
