The city was formed in 1948 from the old county town of 潍县 and the nearby town of 坊子, which is where its name comes from. Foods from there, like the flaky pastry 肉火烧, are still sold as Weixian specialties.
culture
The Weifang International Kite Festival has been held every spring since 1984, and kite making is the city's best-known craft.
