history

The lake gave its name to the ancient kingdom of Dian, 滇国, whose bronzes were dug up on its shore, and through the kingdom 滇 became the short name of Yunnan.

The 180-character couplet at Grand View Tower (大观楼) opens 五百里滇池，奔来眼底, 'five hundred li of Dian Lake rush before my eyes'.
