usage
Today the word lives mostly in biology: 浮游生物 is plankton, split into 浮游动物 (zooplankton) and 浮游植物 (phytoplankton). The sense 'to roam' is literary. Don't confuse it with 蜉蝣, the mayfly, which sounds the same.
