The two rivers together, 洙泗, stand for Confucius and his school, as in 洙泗之间, 'between the Zhu and the Si'. In antiquity they flowed together and then parted north of Qufu, the Zhu to the north and the Si to the south, and Confucius is said to have taught between them.
