The old name comes from the Qing prefecture 江宁府. It is why 宁 stands for Nanjing in 沪宁 (Shanghai-Nanjing); Ningbo is 甬 instead. Today's 江宁区 is a suburban district south of the city, home to Nanjing's Lukou airport.
