A large fruit with a hard, spiky husk around pods of soft, custard-like yellow flesh. Besides eating it fresh, people use it in mooncakes, cakes and ice cream; many airlines and some hotels ban it because of the smell.
Durian is nicknamed 水果之王 ('king of fruit'). It's a loanword from Malay/Thai, which is why the characters 榴莲 are phonetic - the individual meanings (pomegranate + lotus) don't apply.
