Tips

history
He gave himself to the 同泰寺 in 建康 four times, in 527, 529, 546 and 547, and each time his ministers paid the temple a vast sum to buy their emperor back. 杜牧's line 南朝四百八十寺, 'the four hundred and eighty temples of the Southern Dynasties', looks back on that age of temple building.
culture
A favourite Chan story has him ask the monk 达摩 (Bodhidharma) how much merit his temples and copied sutras had earned him. 'No merit at all,' came the answer, and the emperor did not understand. 萧衍 was his personal name.
