About Justin Yifu Lin

born 1952 · 学者 scholar

Economist who, as a Taiwanese army officer on Kinmen, swam across to Xiamen in 1979. He later served as the World Bank's chief economist and founded Peking University's China Center for Economic Research.

Born 林正义, he changed 义 to the same-sounding 谊 in the army because a superior officer had the same name, and became 林毅夫 on the mainland. Taiwan still treats him as a wanted deserter, so he missed his father's funeral in 2002.
