history
Compiled by 黎靖德 in 1270 from the notes that 朱熹's disciples took of his lectures and talks, sorted by topic into 140 juan (scrolls). 朱子 'Master Zhu' is the honorific for Zhu Xi, and 语类 means 'sayings arranged by category'.
culture
Because the disciples wrote down what Zhu actually said, the book keeps many turns of phrase still in use today, among them 花言巧语 'sweet talk' and 回心转意 'to change one's mind'.
