顗 is a rare character found almost only in his name. He taught on Mount Tiantai in Zhejiang, which gave the
天台宗 its name, and he built its teaching around the Lotus Sutra. The title Zhizhe, "the Wise One", was given to him in 591 by the prince who became
隋炀帝.
