Tips
history
王莽 took the throne from the Han in AD 9 and named his dynasty Xin, 'new'. His land and money reforms failed, rebels such as the 赤眉 rose against him, and he was killed in 23. Two years later 刘秀 restored the Han as the 东汉.
usage
In older texts the same two characters can also simply mean 'the new dynasty', as against 前朝, the one before it; context tells which.
