鲁迅 organized a woodcut workshop for young artists in Shanghai and printed the work of European artists such as Käthe Kollwitz for them to learn from. Woodcuts were cheap, quick to make and easy to print in magazines and on posters, so they became the art of protest and, during the war against Japan, of propaganda.
