Tips

history
干宝, a court historian of the Eastern Jin, compiled it in the 4th century, saying in his preface that he meant to show the spirit world was real. The original 30 scrolls were lost; the 20-scroll text read today was pieced together in the Ming.
culture
It is the source of the idioms 不谋而合 'to agree without consulting each other' and 含沙射影 'to attack by innuendo', from a water creature that spat sand at people's shadows and made them ill.
