Lasted from 1937 (Marco Polo Bridge Incident, 七七事变) to 1945 (Japan's surrender). In mainland China the conflict is usually dated as 1931-1945 to include the invasion of Manchuria. Forms part of WWII's Pacific theater.

Often shortened to 抗战. Films, textbooks, and TV dramas set in this era are a huge genre (抗战剧). Victory Day is commemorated on September 3.
1937-1945 war between the Republic of China and the Empire of Japan, ending with Japan's surrender on September 2, 1945. Around 14-20 million Chinese deaths. In China it was long counted as an eight-year war; since 2017 textbooks count fourteen years, from 1931. Outside China it is called the Second Sino-Japanese War, part of WWII.
