grammar

上 marks reaching a goal. 他当老师 'he is a teacher' states a job; 他当上了老师 'he became a teacher' says he got there. The same 上 appears in 考上 'to pass the entrance exam for', 过上 'to come to live (a life)' and 爱上 'to fall in love with'.
