General under 曹操 in the Three Kingdoms era. At 逍遥津 in 215 he led 800 men against the far larger army of 孙权; stories say Wu mothers hushed crying children with his name.
Before 曹操 he served 丁原, 董卓 and 吕布 in turn, surrendering after Lü Bu fell at 下邳. The story of the hushed children lives on as the phrase 张辽止啼, 'Zhang Liao stops the crying'.
