The full name is 平凉市, and the 泾河 runs through it. 崆峒山, just west of the city, is a sacred mountain of Daoism and gave its name to the 崆峒派 school of wuxia fiction.

The name dates from the 4th century and is usually explained as 'pacifying Liang', after the conquest of the Former Liang state.
