Head of the Nazi SS, the 党卫军, from 1929 to 1945 and chief organiser of the Holocaust. Captured by British troops at the end of the war, he killed himself in May 1945.

From 1934 he also controlled the Gestapo, in Chinese 盖世太保: a sound loan whose characters happen to read 'peerless Grand Protector', from 盖世 'unmatched in the world' and 太保, an ancient court title.
