Tips

culture
布达拉 (Bùdálā) is a Tibetan-via-Sanskrit transliteration of Potala, the mountain abode of Avalokiteśvara (Guanyin) in Buddhist cosmology. The Lhasa hill - in Tibetan Marpo Ri 'Red Hill' - was renamed Potala because the Dalai Lamas, considered emanations of Avalokiteśvara, made it their seat. The thirteen-story Potala Palace 布达拉宫 (built 1645-1694 under the Fifth Dalai Lama) crowns it.
