The 岳麓书院 Yuelu Academy, one of the great academies of the Song, stands at its foot, and 湖南大学 traces its history back to it. Up the slope is the 爱晚亭, named from 杜牧's line 停车坐爱枫林晚 'I stop my carriage, for I love the maple wood at dusk'.

岳 is the great mountain 衡山, the Southern Peak, and 麓 the foot of a mountain: an old saying counts this hill as the foot of Hengshan's seventy-two peaks.
