张继's 枫桥夜泊 made it famous: 姑苏城外寒山寺，夜半钟声到客船 'outside the walls of Gusu, Hanshan Temple; its midnight bell reaches the traveller's boat'. The temple is named after 寒山, the Tang poet-monk said to have lived there.
