Tips

history
南中 covered today's Yunnan, Guizhou and southern Sichuan. When it rose against Shu Han in 225, 诸葛亮 led a campaign south and, by the account in 《汉晋春秋》, freed Meng Huo each time he was caught, until Meng Huo promised that the south would never rebel again. He later served at the Shu Han court.
culture
The story fills several chapters of 《三国演义》, with a new trick for each capture, and gave the idiom 七擒七纵: winning someone over with patience rather than force.
