Tips

history
Begun in 1709 and greatly enlarged under 乾隆, the gardens mixed Chinese landscapes with European-style stone palaces, the 西洋楼, designed by Jesuit missionaries. In October 1860, at the end of the Second Opium War, British and French troops looted them and then burned them on Lord Elgin's orders. Bronze animal heads from its zodiac fountain still turn up at auction.
