The poem pictures a battle Chu is losing. Its line 车错毂兮短兵接 'the chariot hubs lock and short weapons meet' is the source of 短兵相接. It ends 魂魄毅兮为鬼雄 'their souls stand firm, heroes among the ghosts', which Li Qingzhao echoed in 生当作人杰，死亦为鬼雄.

Outside the poem the word is solemn and literary, used for war memorials. The 国殇墓园 in 腾冲, Yunnan, is the cemetery of the Chinese soldiers who died retaking the town from Japanese forces in 1944.
