国共 joins the first characters of
国民党 and
共产党. Mainland textbooks call the last phase (1945–1949) the
解放战争 'War of Liberation';
国共内战 is the neutral name used in Taiwan and by historians. The fighting largely paused during the war against Japan (1937–1945), when the two parties formed a second united front.
