Tips

history
Until 788 the name was written 回纥; that year the khagan asked the Tang court to write 回鹘 instead, after the 鹘 falcon, "swift and fierce as a falcon". After the khaganate fell in 840, one group founded a kingdom at 高昌 near Turpan and another settled in Gansu, ancestors of the 裕固族.
