Tips

history
It was once the main outlet of Lake Tai, with its own mouth on the Yangtze. As it silted up, the 黄浦江 took over its role in the Ming and it became a tributary of the Huangpu; the old name of its mouth, 吴淞口, passed to the mouth of the Huangpu.
usage
The 淞 in 淞沪 (Shanghai and its surroundings, as in 淞沪会战, the Battle of Shanghai of 1937) is this river.
