The bottom of the Turpan basin, 艾丁湖, lies about 150 metres below sea level, the lowest point in China. Snowmelt reaches the vineyards through hand-dug underground channels, and the red 火焰山 is the Flaming Mountain that Sun Wukong has to cross in 西游记.
