One of the ten marshals of the People's Liberation Army. In 1976 he and Hua Guofeng had the 四人帮 (Gang of Four) arrested, ending the Cultural Revolution; he then chaired the National People's Congress Standing Committee.

In 1962 Mao summed him up with a couplet: 诸葛一生唯谨慎，吕端大事不糊涂, 'Zhuge Liang was careful all his life; Lü Duan, the Song chancellor, kept a clear head on great matters'.
