Tips

history
The opening chapter of the 荀子 argues that people become noble only through steady, lifelong study. It is the source of 青出于蓝 'the pupil surpasses the teacher', 锲而不舍 'to keep chiselling away', and the line 不积跬步,无以至千里 'without piling up half-steps you cannot travel a thousand li'.
culture
Later poets reused the title. 颜真卿's quatrain ends 黑发不知勤学早,白首方悔读书迟 'with black hair you don't think to study early; with white hair you regret starting late'.
