Tips

history
From the Book of Songs: 昔我往矣,杨柳依依, 'when I set out, the willows swayed'. Because 柳 'willow' sounds like 留 'to stay', people broke off a willow twig for a friend who was leaving, and the swaying branches came to mean not wanting to part, as in 依依不舍.
