usage
伊万 is the usual modern spelling of Ivan, as in 伊万诺夫 Ivanov, 'son of Ivan'. The older 伊凡 is kept for the tsars, such as 伊凡雷帝 Ivan the Terrible. In 伊万斯 Evans the same two characters only spell the sound.
