The Nine Grounds chapter of The Art of War is about nine kinds of terrain for battle.
Tips
history
九 stood for the utmost in ancient Chinese, so 九地 is the very bottom, the opposite of 九天 (the highest heaven). 孙子兵法 uses the pair: the skilled defender hides below the deepest earth, the skilled attacker strikes from the highest heaven.
culture
The chapter 九地 sorts ground from home territory to "deadly ground", where an army must fight or perish. It is the source of 同舟共济: even the enemy states of Wu and Yue would help each other in a storm if they shared a boat.
